Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District’s 2020 Facilities Plan
Milwaukee, Wisconsin
The MMSD’s 2020 Facilities Plan is a long-range comprehensive planning document that identifies the improvements necessary to achieve the water resource goals inspired by the public, as well as those required under WDNR regulations and state law and USEPA regulations established and enforced under the federal Clean Water Act.
Despite success in reducing the impacts from point source pollution, such as industries and wastewater treatment plants, the Milwaukee area’s aquatic ecosystems remain impaired due to complex problems. Many of these problems are caused by nonpoint source pollution. The 2020 Facilities Plan addresses needed and ongoing water pollution abatement for MMSD’s planning and sewer service area through the year 2020.
The 5-year long planning effort was lead by Tim Bate, P.E., Engineering Planning Manager for the MMSD, who won the 2007 ASCE Wisconsin Section Distinguished Service Award. HNTB Corporation lead the consultant team, which included Brown and Caldwell, Tetra Tech, HydroQual, TN & Associates, Norris and Associates, Symbiont, AES, Penne Wilson Consulting, Bay Ridge Consulting and many others.
The project was completed in collaboration with the Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission’s Regional Water Quality Management Plan Update.
