2007 NATIONAL PUBLIC SERVICE AWARD
We are pleased to announce that the Wisconsin Section Younger Member Group has been awarded the 2007 American Society of Civil Engineers National Public Service Award! This award will be accepted by Jenny Sonnenberg, current YMG President, on November 9, 2008 at the ASCE Annual Conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
We (the YMG) had applied for the Public Service award for the Outreach and volunteer activities we did from October 2006 through September 2007. In early 2008 we received the 2007 Zone III Public Service Award. Winners from each Zone are then automatically nominated for the National Public Service Award. The award recipient is selected by the ASCE Committee on Volunteer Community Service to recognize "the very best program for reaching out to the community in a way that benefits the public and that enhances the image of the civil engineering profession." And for 2007, that was us!!! We should be extremely proud of our accomplishments and maybe even more so as this was not strictly a competition among other YMG's, this was open to any group at any level within ASCE (i.e. Section, Branch, YMG, or Student).
This award deserves a big THANK YOU to all our members who volunteer with our Outreach activities. I had the special privilege of being the Outreach Director that year and I believe we had approximately 25 individuals volunteer over the course of the 2006 – 2007 year. I would love to list each name separately, but I will refrain from doing so for fear I would accidentally miss someone. I would like to thank a few key individuals:
Laura Gerold – for getting the K-12 Outreach program off the ground in 2004
Ben DeBaker – 2007 K - 4th grade Outreach Leader
Sara Prichard – 2007 4th - 8th grade Outreach Leader
Dave Cockrum – 2007 Future Cities Coordinator
Cari Roper – 2007 Mathcounts Coordinator
I will finish this announcement with an excerpt from the notification letter:
"The Younger Members Group has helped students learn about engineering through an extensive k-12 outreach program, including the Elm Dale Discovery Day, Bruce Guadalupe Career Day, the Future City Competition and the Mathcounts Competition. In the k-12 outreach program they have introduced the idea of engineering into the students' lives as a possible career choice for their future. The program they created has helped to educate school children on careers in math and science with an emphasis on engineering. Their volunteer work has brought awareness to the children of the possibilities that lie ahead in the world of civil engineering.
They have also been active in the community by collecting food donations for the hunger task force and by ringing bells for the Salvation Army during the holiday season. This work does more than can be simply stated in terms of promoting the civil engineering profession. By doing such work as ASCE members, it not only gives people a chance to see civil engineers as active, helpful community members, but gives the volunteers a chance to discuss the profession with the public.
Your Group's contributions to society as civil engineers and, more importantly, its contributions to society as individuals who happen to be civil engineers is a credit to all of you. We are privileged to have the members of the Forum as part of the civil engineering profession."
Again, thank you all for your time and effort. I am truly proud to be a part of this award-winning group!
Sincerely,
Jenny Sonnenberg
