Director of Public Works
East Dundee, IL (pop. 3,200) The Village of East Dundee is seeking progressive, energetic, highly collaborative candidates for a Director of Public Works position. Ideal candidates will have well rounded management experience with a focus on Public Works and Capital Improvement Planning. The new Director will have several unique opportunities in this position: to develop and implement a fiscally-responsible Capital Improvement Plan for infrastructure needs in the Village; to be a part of an executive team that are dedicated, committed and supportive professionals and to completely review the current structure of the Department and recommend changes that will enhance its efficiency and effectiveness within the community. The Village of East Dundee, a home rule community as defined by the Illinois Constitution, is located approximately 35 miles west of the City of Chicago, in both Kane and Cook Counties. According to the 2010 census, there were 2,860 residents with current estimates at 3,198. East Dundee encompasses approximately 3.1 square miles. Today, East Dundee offers a vibrant, resilient community supporting a variety of businesses and industry, low taxes, and a wide variety of community events. The Village is committed to building a sustainable community through the stabilization of Village revenues, smart investments through TIF’s and business development districts, enhancing its infrastructure through capital planning and development including the modernization of buildings and infrastructure, and revitalizing it downtown.
The successful candidate will have the following qualifications and experiences:
- A strong commitment to creative problem-solving through teamwork and professionalism, outstanding supervisory and administrative skills, fiscal acumen and highly developed interpersonal and oral/written communication skills.
- A demonstrated record of team-oriented style leadership with a comprehensive knowledge of street maintenance, water treatment and distribution and wastewater collection and treatment, and the ability to facilitate the development of a strong solutions based, customer service focused department.
- An ability to facilitate a mindset change in employees to empower them to form a teamwork approach to departmental goals and responsibilities and to encourage them to offer creative ideas for advancing the mission of the department and problem solving.
- A bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, public administration, public policy, business administration or a closely related field from an accredited college or university and/or extensive experience in Public Works is desired. Seven to 10 years of progressively responsible public sector public works management, or public administrative or managerial experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience, is desired. Experience in a larger community at the assistant department head level will also be considered. A Professional Engineer (P.E.) designation is desired, but not required. Possession of a water and/or wastewater license in Illinois, or the ability to obtain the licenses, is highly desired.
A starting salary of $110,000 + DOQ with a great benefits package is offered. Residency is not required.
