Construction Manager Opportunity

raSmith is a consulting civil engineering and land surveying company dedicated to our clients, employees and profession. Our work includes both private and public sector projects in land development, transportation/traffic, structural, municipal and ecological areas. We work on projects nationwide from our eight locations in Wisconsin, Illinois and California.

We currently have an opening for a Construction Manager in our Brookfield, WI market. The successful candidate will work with the Project Managers to help direct and coordinate construction inspection of raSmith projects. The essential duties are:

  • Leading the technical aspects of the project through innovative and creative solutions to overcome obstacles and ensure client satisfaction
  • Creating and maintaining project schedules with Project Managers, staying on top of project budgets and directing engineers and technicians involved with projects
  • Planning and executing QA/QC plans for individual projects and representing the firm at meetings and conferences to resolve issues and coordinate work
  • Maintaining client relationships, coordinating inspection of municipal or WISDOT projects and supervising compliance with specifications

Qualifications for the position include:

  • At least 10 years of progressive experience in construction design based engineering and construction inspection
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and a Professional Engineer (P.E.) registration in Wisconsin is preferred
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D software is also highly preferred

Senior Structural Engineer

The Madison or Milwaukee office of SmithGroup is looking for a Senior Structural Engineer to join our team.

Working with us, you will:

  • Provide leadership and help to build a structural engineering team.
  • Perform structural analysis, design and documentation of buildings, site structures, architectural features, earth retention systems, sheet pile, and complex projects involving interdisciplinary project teams. Waterfront and marine structure experience is a plus.
  • Develop structural designs for structures of various materials that experience multiple loading conditions that could include extreme loading (high wind, heavy snow, ice, high seismic, blast, progressive collapse, etc.)
  • Create and develop innovative planning and design concepts for projects through collaboration with architectural and site design leaders.
  • Independently assess design requirements, determine level of effort and provide input on scheduling and fees. Manage and monitor structural and budget performance of projects.
  • Revise, review, and coordinate construction documents (drawings and specifications) to meet project requirements.
  • Lead quality assurance reviews of projects developed by other teams.
  • Direct and manage team’s construction administration including site visits as required for observation, answering contractor questions, or representing the owner in reviewing completed work.
  • Prepare presentation drawings, assist in developing proposal materials and participate in presentations both internally and externally.
  • Supervise, mentor and train Structural Engineers, CAD/Structural techs, interns and junior staff.

An ideal candidate has:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Civil or Architectural Engineering with a concentration in Structural Engineering or equivalent. Master’s degree in Structural or Architectural Engineering preferred.
  • 12+ years of structural and civil engineering experience.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) required. Structural Engineer (SE) licensure preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work with team members in other disciplines, consultants, and clients.
  • A working knowledge of the design and construction process, project administration and administration procedures.
  • Proficiency with REVIT, Structural Analysis Programs, and the Microsoft Office Suite, experience with CAD is a plus.
  • Interest in and active participation in professional societies a plus.

  • Lead projects and serve as the project civil engineer ensuring that the technical aspects of the project meet the quality expectations while complementing the design intent.
  • Collaborate with other civil engineers, site design professionals and permitting specialists as well as architects, building engineers, and planners.
  • Produce civil engineering designs, including preparing project plans and specifications for site development or redevelopment of educational, medical, research, commercial and public facilities.
  • Provide guidance and mentor junior civil engineering staff.
  • Perform site reviews, construction site visits, and coordinate all aspects of Construction Administration.
  • Communicate with clients, sub-consultants, contractors, and all government levels of regulatory agencies regarding engineering, permitting and site development issues.

An ideal candidate has:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent.
  • Minimum 3 -8 years of design experience working as a Civil Engineer.
  • LEED AP preferred. Professional Registration preferred or can become registered.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and Civil 3D programs; stormwater modeling experience a plus.
  • Ability to multi-task under rigid deadlines.
  • Proven expertise in sustainable design and green infrastructure including water resources, stream/river restoration.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and excels in the ability to work with clients and colleagues at all levels.
