Transportation Engineer

The Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission (SEWRPC), the regional planning agency for the seven county greater Milwaukee area and the designated Metropolitan Planning Organization for the five urbanized areas within southeastern Wisconsin, has an immediate opening for a civil engineer with an interest in transportation and traffic engineering and planning. The Commission is looking for a highly motivated individual interested in joining a diverse team of planners and engineers focused on ensuring that the Region is prepared to compete on a national and global scale economically while improving the quality of life for the Region’s residents. The Transportation Engineer will be a key staff member working in the Transportation Division to conduct and assist in preparation of plans and reports and the analysis and visualization of data.

Current Major Projects that the individual in this position may work on include:

  • Regional Safe Streets Action Plan
  • Milwaukee County Jurisdictional Highway System Plan
  • 2023-2026 Transportation Improvement Program

Examples of Duties:

  • Preparation of traffic/transportation analyses
  • Preparation of transportation plans
  • Preparation of a short-range transportation improvement program
  • Evaluation and prioritization of projects for various Federal funding sources
  • Assistance to local units of government in the areas of traffic impact and transportation planning studies


  • A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, with an emphasis in transportation and/or traffic engineering
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work within and contribute to a team structure and to work with diverse groups of individuals within diverse environments


  • A master’s degree or current professional engineer registration
  • Experience with traffic analysis software (such as Highway Capacity Software), AutoCAD, Cube, ArcGIS, and SQL
  • Experience with transportation asset management, roadway safety, and complete streets

Salary range is $50,000 to $90,000 depending upon education, experience, and placement with the organizational structure. Salary outside the range may be considered for highly qualified applicants.

The primary duties of the Transportation Engineer are to serve in a technical role under the direction of a Project Manager and work collaboratively with a team of knowledgeable engineers. Candidates with 0 – 10 years of experience with the following:

Structural Engineer with our Transportation Department, based in either our Milwaukee, WI office or in our Madison, Wisconsin, office where you will develop design solutions for high profile major bridge projects. The successful candidate will have a minimum of TEN YEARS EXPERIENCE and a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering with a Structural emphasis. Experience is required with Leap Bridge; Microstation; CONSPAN; MDX; LPile & prior experience on WisDOT bridge design projects will be a plus.

Bridge Leader:
As a seller-doer, this person will serve as project manager or technical lead on bridge-related projects. They will work closely with our Transportation Division and take active participation in business development activities including project pursuits, client management, and organizational involvement.

Sr. Structural Project Engineer – Cold-Formed:
This position, either individually or as part of a team, is responsible for the overall design, review and coordination of cold-formed steel structural building related projects from inception through completion of construction. They will organize and manage structural design efforts for multiple simultaneous projects, manage and review structural engineering drawings for assigned projects including the preparation of plans, schedules and details.

Structural Engineer – Buildings:
This person will design structural systems of cast-in-place and precast concrete, structural steel, masonry and wood framing for a variety of healthcare, commercial, industrial, multi-family residential, mixed-use and institutional buildings. This person will also prepare structural calculations for submittal to regulating authority and perform and/or coordinate the review of shop drawing submittals.
